The Meaning and Effect of Colour

A few months back I started a bi-weekly instagram series of Colour Facts. It really warmed my heart how people responded to these posts and how keen people were to find out fun facts about their favourite shades. So it made sense to put all these posts in one place and continue to share some great insta-inspo on all the colours of the rainbow! So sit back, strap in as we go on a tour of the rainbow!

PINK

Slide1

TOP 3 FUN FACTS!

  •  Pink has been used on prison walls to reduce erratic behaviour of inmates as Pink has a tranquillising affect on the mind- although this does depend on the red content; the more red in the pink, the less calming it will be
  • It is believed that pastries taste better when packaged in pink boxes or served on pink plates as the colour makes us crave sugar
  • While in western cultures pink is associated with femininity, in Japan pink is a masculine colour due to pink cherry blossom trees being symbolic of Japanese warriors that fell in in battle

RED

Slide2

TOP 3 FUN FACTS!

  • Red is a colour that indicates passion and courage, which is why you see it in so many national flags
  • Red light is soothing for chickens. It helps them to calm down, sleep better, and avoid cannibalism and pecking problems; maybe a great playroom shade in the human world then… and hopefully no connection to the Red Light District….
  • The colour red increases heart rate and evokes a sense of urgency, which is why it is often used in marketing sales and discounts! You manipulative so and so’s! That is also why red is often used by fast food brands as alongside the urgency it seduces your “inner cravings” Cheeky Nando’s anyone??

  • Orange is a popular choice for restaurants as it apparently promotes feelings of hunger
  • The colour Orange is said to boost creativity and also aid decision making… not sure what hard hitting decisions we are making on the loo…. it is good thinking time I guess!

YELLOW

Slide4

TOP 3 FUN FACTS!

  • Studies show that the color yellow can increase mental activity and muscle energy. The color yellow helps activate the memory, encourage communication, enhance vision, build confidence, and stimulate the nervous system.
  • Disturbingly, I found that there is such thing as “too much” as overuse of yellow can have an adverse effect; it is a proven fact that babies cry more in rooms painted yellow…. uh oh! The ultimate “gender neutral” colour is causing serious bedtime dramas?? Too much yellow also can cause people to become critical and demanding. Again, not traits you want in a newborn…
  • Just to keep things confusing…. Too little yellow causes feelings of isolation and fear, insecurity, and low self-esteem. A lack of yellow can cause one to become rigid, cunning, possessive, or defensive. A very confusing colour!!

GREEN

Slide5

TOP 3 FUN FACTS!

  • Green is said to be so restful because it takes up more space in the spectrum visible to the naked eye. Fun Fact for any Disney fans; when Disney wants to “hide” the back side of a show building from guests they paint it in a shade called “go away green” which draws the eye away as it’s a colour we are so used to seeing in nature.
  • This is also what makes green a good back drop to a flat lay or a gallery wall as it will make everything stand out more. I wish I could claim to know this when we painted our lounge as that would make me dead fancy, but alas I just liked the colour so painted it on the wall; no planning, no foresight….
  • Green is often associated with Ireland, leprechauns, clovers and St Paddy’s day. As such it is considered an incredibly lucky colour.

BLUE

Slide6

TOP 3 FUN FACTS!

  • Dark Blues communicate importance; hence why police and fireman wear blue but also why the Blue Power Suit is such a statement of authority. Don’t know if that means my choice of blue for the office means I have an inflated view of my significance at work
  • Too much Blue can evoke feelings of sadness and melancholy; I guess that why they call it the Blues
  • Blue is a favourite choice in marketing cleaning products due to its association with water and air which correlated with cleanliness

PURPLE

purple

TOP 3 FUN FACTS!

  • The colour purple is often associated with royalty, nobility and luxury. This is because purple dye was so difficult to obtain and expensive to produce
  • Pantone’s “Colour of the Year” for 2018 is Ultraviolet
  • You may have heard a “fact” that nothing rhymes with “purple” allow me to enlighten you and make you a Winner next time you play scrabble….
CURPLE: a strap under the girth of a horses saddle that stops the saddle kicking forward
HIRPLE: to walk with a limp

BLACK

Slide8

TOP 3 FUN FACTS!

  • Black has very opposing interpretations; On the one hand it is associated with power, elegance, strength and defiance; think Black Belt, Black Tie, Black Card. On the flip side it’s also associated with evil, death, mystery and fear; think Black Hole, Black List, Black Out.
  • Vantablack, the world’s darkest material. It absorbs 99.9% of light, making the surface it covers look like a void. Any depth of black will always make other colours stand out, making it the perfect choice for a gallery wall!
  • Black is a symbol of superiority which is why it is the leading colour used in marketing to convey luxury and exclusivity; think Chanel, Tom Ford, YSL etc. Therefore, wearing black increases attractiveness by making one seem more fashionable…

GREY

Slide9

TOP 3 FUN FACTS!

  • Grey is the colour of intellect, knowledge and wisdom; a colour that is perceived as dignified, conservative and carries authority
  • Apparently if grey is your favourite colour you have a desire to protect yourself and often feel in danger.  Grey provides a feeling of security and uniformity, it is believed that perhaps the rising popularity of grey in interiors is due to the current uncertain times we live in. In the home surrounding yourself with grey is like cocooning yourself from the outside world
  • If you wear a lot of grey you are sophisticated, modern and stylish…. I’d also add that if you wear grey in summer you either have a fantastic deodorant or are fearless when it comes to sweat patches

  • White represents new beginnings and purity so is the traditional colour choice for brides in the western world, but a colour for mourning in China and parts of Africa as it represents the end of one life and beginning of another

So which colour do you use most in your home? I personally am a huge fan of green, but pretty much any colour that has a grey tone to it makes me pretty happy! So knowing what affect and facts are behind each colour, will this inform your choices in your home? or, like me, will you be more a “go with your gut” decorator??
